Footage of the mysterious creature went viral earlier this week after a group of runners spotted it in North Carolina, US.
The video has since been seen across the globe after conspiracy theorists from the Bigfoot 911 group posted it to Facebook.
The actual clip – which shows the beast roaming woodland – is from 2015 in the same area but was used to back up claims Bigfoot had returned.
Group member John Bruner, walking in the same area as the clip was filmed, wrote online: “I turned on my headlamp and saw a large bi-pedal animal covered in hair.
“Its face was solid black, no hair on it. The hair looked shaggy all over.”
He said it quickly took off but claimed it was the best sighting he’s had in years of searching for the animal.
“I was able to see details of the creature like the face and the hair was matted and stringy. The eyes were farther apart than human eyes,” John said.
And it seems news of the sighting made waves across the internet, with a nearby police department warning residents to be vigilant.
Posting on its Facebook page, the Greenville Police Department – based in South Carolina – said: “If you see Bigfoot, please do not shoot at him or her.”
But the police went on to say: “After watching this video from nearby Boone, North Carolina, Facebook followers and friends, I think we can say with some confidence that proof of Bigfoot still eludes us.
“You’ll most likely be wounding a fun-loving and well-intentioned person, sweating in a gorilla costume.”
