Massive Earthquake Hits Lesbos Causing Much Destruction and Injuries

At least 10 people were injured and many homes destroyed today in Plomari on the Greek islands of Lesbos. Reaching a magnitude of 6.3, the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Agean sea, 7 miles south of Lesbos, a popular tourist hotspot. Greece and Turkey are located on major fault lines and while earthquakes come as no surprise to the locals, there does seem to be increased tremor activity of late.

Marios Apostolides, a fire service supervisor said, “Dozens of homes have collapsed and village roads are blocked. We are trying to disengage a woman trapped in debris.”

The Mayor of Plomari, Manolis Armenakas, said, “We have damage to several buildings, old and new. We are now evaluating the damage.”

The quake could also be felt in Turkey although no subsequent damage was reported.
