Last Tuesday, when House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff added former SDNY prosecutor Daniel Goldman to his team, it signaled just how serious he is in wanting to take Donald Trump down and remove him from the White House once and for all. From a legal perspective, this move certainly was a step in the right direction toward doing so, however, from a public relations standpoint, it left a much needed void which must be addressed.
Fortunately, Schiff realizes that and is already taking the necessary steps in that regard as well. How so? Well, the first sign of this came when he brought Trump’s former henchman Michael Cohen in to publicly testify about the crimes he committed for Trump. In the court of public opinion, his testimony reverberated strongly, and confirmed what most already instinctively knew about Trump.
The next sign came when Schiff let it be known that House Democrats will be bringing in Trump’s former business partner Felix Sater and Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg to publicly testify on more of Trump’s crimes. But based on what Schiff said on NBC’s Meet the Press Sunday morning, these are nothing more than intermediary steps, and the endgame is already in sight.
When asked about the possibility of Mueller concluding his investigation without having forced Donald Trump into testifying before a grand jury, Adam Schiff said it would be a “mistake” by the Special Counsel.
“I do think ultimately it’s a mistake, because probably the best way to get the truth would be to put the president under oath. Because, as he’s made plain in the past, he feels it’s perfectly fine to lie to the public. After all, he has said, ‘It’s not like I’m talking before a magistrate.’ Well, maybe he should talk before a magistrate,” Schiff said.
Ultimately, we don’t know what Mueller will do here, but it appears Schiff is mapping out his plans pretty clearly. Regardless of the Special Counsel’s move, Schiff is laying the groundwork to subpoena Trump to publicly testify before Congress about his scandals. And that’s something most of us can’t wait to see.
