A woman has shared a stomach-churning photo online of what appears to be live maggots in her KFC chicken.

The photo, posted to Twitter on Sunday, shows a piece of deep fried chicken next to a KFC box and clumps of what look like small grains of rice.

Hope you’re going great. Just wondering what the heck these white things are on my sister’s food. OK thank you!’ the woman captioned the photo.

In a follow up tweet the same woman posted a stock image of maggots that look very similar to the clumps on her chicken.

‘Unrelated: a photo of fly eggs I found on the internet,’ she captioned that picture.

KFC Australia responded to the image over Twitter asking the woman who posted the picture for more details.

‘We take matters like this very seriously. Can you please share all details via our website so a member of our Customer Service Team can follow up with you?’ their post read.

KFC also issued a statement to news.com.au saying it was unlikely the contamination happened before the product was bought.

‘It’s unlikely this situation happened in our restaurant pre-purchase. KFC works closely with leading Australian forensic entomologists to understand flies to ensure our restaurant cooking and food handling practices are robust so we can keep our food safe,’ the statement said.

‘Their latest studies show that flies only deposit eggs in food with temperatures between 10 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius. We hold our raw chicken below these temperatures and our cooked chicken well above.’

The fast food giant then urged customers to take care when leaving food out and uncovered, especially in the warmer months.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted KFC for comment.
