The purportedly neutral outlet blares in dramatic fashion its desire for the current president’s term to end
The Atlantic magazine dropped any pretense of objectivity on Thursday morning by blaring “IMPEACH” across the cover of its upcoming March issue — and it’s calling upon the House of Representatives to set in motion the process of removing President Donald Trump from office.
It’s no secret that many mainstream media outlets and journalists supported or sympathized with 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
The Atlantic, in fact — traditionally reluctant to endorse presidential candidates — backed Clinton in 2016.
Many of these same outlets and reporters have covered the Trump administration with a decidedly negative spin after Hillary Clinton’s stunning loss in the election.
But it’s another matter altogether for a purportedly objective outlet to call outright for a president’s impeachment.
The cover story, written by senior editor Yoni Applebaum and published online Thursday, said it is time to impeach Trump because he “has not kept that promise” he swore an oath to uphold “to faithfully execute the office of president of the United States and, to the best of his ability, to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
The Atlantic believes that Trump has “mounted a concerted challenge to the separation of powers, to the rule of law, and to the civil liberties enshrined in our founding documents” and “purposefully inflamed America’s divisions.”
Applebaum insisted “this is not a partisan judgment,” instead pointing to the criticisms leveled at Trump from the NeverTrumpers within the Republican Party.
Trump’s actions as president attack “the very foundations of America’s constitutional democracy,” according to The Atlantic piece, and therefore “clearly meet, and exceed, the criteria to trigger this fail-safe” impeachment process.
“With a newly seated Democratic majority, the House of Representatives can no longer dodge its constitutional duty. It must immediately open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump, and bring the debate out of the court of public opinion and into Congress, where it belongs,” Applebaum declared.
The publication’s editor-in-chief, Jeffery Goldberg, also penned an op-ed for the March issue called, “Impeachment: An Argument.”
“Here at The Atlantic, we are caught in an eternal dilemma. Our founding manifesto promises readers that we will be of no party or clique,” Goldberg noted. “And yet our founding editors also promised that The Atlantic would stand for impartial liberty and wage war ‘against despotism in every form.’”
That commitment, Goldberg argued, justifies The Atlantic’s impeachment cover story.
As most people well know, some Democratic lawmakers and pundits called for Trump’s impeachment even before he took the oath of office. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), for example, has used the “Impeach 45!” mantra during her speeches and events almost from the moment Trump was elected. And now that a new wave of progressive Democratic lawmakers have taken seats in the House, the impeachment calls are growing more frequent and vocal.
The Atlantic’s cover story and reasoning for calling for impeachment earned a variety of reactions on social media platforms.
“The lefty Atlantic would have supported impeachment in 2016 before he took office. No one cares,” Media Research Center (MRC) Vice President for Business and Culture Dan Gainor tweeted.
On the other hand, actress Mia Farrow tweeted, “Impeach Trump Now — ‘He has purposefully inflamed America’s divisions. He has set himself against the American idea, the principle that all of us — of every race, gender, and creed — are created equal.’ — by Yoni Appelbaum -The Atlantic
