Ocasio-Cortez Deletes Humiliating Tweet But Internet is Forever

There’s a simple rule applicable to most areas of life, but especially important when it comes to choosing public servants: if you can’t trust someone to get the easy stuff right, you shouldn’t trust them with the complex stuff. Perhaps no current member of Congress demonstrates this better than Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The freshman New York Democrat has already proven herself to be something of a walking disaster in her first months on the job, but that doesn’t seem to stop her from picking fights and leveling personal attacks that blow up in her face.

This week, the Daily Caller reports, she tweeted an attack on Josh Holmes, a Republican consultant who used to be Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s chief of staff. AOC made the bizarre Holmes “helps run a multimillion dollar operation to have bot accounts manipulate online discourse.”

Her “evidence” was the following tweet, from MapLight’s Andrew Perez discussing the funding sources of Job Creators Network, the conservative group currently embarrassing AOC with critical Times Square billboards:

There are just two teensy problems here: Cavalry isn’t Berman, and “bots” is a pretty big leap from a catchall term like “astroturf.”

Is Ocasio Cortez clueless?

After getting a sound fisking online, Ocasio-Cortez deleted the tweet, hilariously claiming she “want[s] to make sure any comments about it are thorough”:

For future reference, claims like this tend to have more credibility when you do the fact-checking before throwing out a public accusation.

Holmes himself responded, saying what most of us are no doubt thinking:

Lots of conservatives online are having a well-deserved laugh about AOC’s factual sloppiness and the absurdity of the general “bot” complaints, but it’s also worth noting that this particular attack came in large part from the Left’s quasi-religious obsession with “dark money,” the idea that there’s something sinister about political spending in the pursuit of non-progressive values.

Coming from the leaders and politicians, it’s an insincere, hypocritical pretext for financially disarming conservatives while liberals continue to reap the benefits of union money and free advertising from the mainstream media. But for the young idiots who actually believe this stuff, it shuts down any thought or debate about the actual ideas being funded.

Which side of that line Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez falls on is still an open question.
