Soon after Justin Trudeau delivered his remarks in Vancouver on the Lavalin scandal, opposition leader Andrew Scheer pressed for a Justice Committee investigation into the affair.
The statement comes as the accusations of potential political interference into the justice system reach new heights.
“If Justin Trudeau is truly innocent and has nothing to hide, he should welcome the justice committee proceedings and should allow his staff to participate in them”, said Andrew Scheer.
Opposition leaders across the board have decided to table a justice committee investigation into the Lavalin accusations.
Earlier today it was announced that the ethics commissioner is launching their own private investigation into the claims. Scheer and others claim that this is not enough and another investigation must follow.
Since the story broke, CPC leader Andrew Scheer has been vocal in his criticism of the PMO’s behavior.
“If Justin Trudeau decides to stonewall us or shut down the committee on Wednesday we will use every legal and law enforcement tool at our disposal,” said Andrew Scheer in the live statement to the public. “The government’s story keeps changing and Canadians are no closer to knowing the truth than they were four days ago when this story broke.”
In his latest comments, Justin Trudeau has said he welcomes an ethics investigation and that the former Justice Minister, Jody Wilson-Raybould is bound by a solicitor-client agreement and so can’t comment on the accusations
It becomes more and more important for Justin Trudeau to wave solicitor client privilege so Canadians can get answers,” said Scheer.
Considering the Liberal government holds a house majority it is likely that the motion for a justice committee investigation will be declined.
“This is more than just an issue of ethics, there’s potential criminality at play,” said Scheer.
