New Jersey police have arrested a teenager in the vicious beating of an 81-year-old man who wore a Make America Great Again hat.
The elderly victim was walking outside of a ShopRite supermarket in Elizabeth, N.J., when the teen confronted him over the hat.
When the man attempted to walk away that is when 19-year-old Ryan M. Salvagno assaulted him, N.J.com reported.
“As the victim turned to walk away, defendant Salvagno was able to grab the victim’s hat and the two struggled for sole possession of the hat,” Michael H. Robertson, the prosecutor on the case said.
“Salvagno then took the victim by the arm and threw him to the ground, tipping over the victim’s cart of groceries and ultimately throwing the hat to the side,” he said.
Authorities charged Salvagno, of Somerset, with disorderly persons offenses of assault and harassment. Police did not disclose how they identified the alleged attacker.
The victim suffered minor injuries and declined medical treatment, according to the prosecutor’s office.
It is one of several recent attacks against people who wore MAGA hats. This week a woman was taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement after attacking a man.
Should the teen go to prison?
Last week a Brazilian woman in a Mexican restaurant attacked a man for doing nothing other than wearing a Make America Great Again hat.
The woman was arrested on the spot and taken into police custody where she was charged.
In interviews since the attack the woman, Rosaine Santos, has maintained that she was the victim of a hat crime.
Nope, that is not a typo. Not a hate crime, a hat crime. She felt victimized by the man’s hat.
But what she really is, is a victim of herself. She was living in the shadows and successfully avoiding detection.
Because of her actions she found herself in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement as she is an illegal alien who now faces deportation, CBS Boston reported.
The woman who was charged with confronting a man wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat inside a Falmouth Mexican restaurant was taken into custody by ICE. The department said she was in the country illegally.
Police said Rosiane Santos walked by Bryton Turner as he was eating dinner at Casa Vallarta and knocked the hat off his head. She then allegedly confronted him verbally.
Turner recorded video showing some of the confrontation.
Falmouth Police charged Santos with disorderly conduct following the incident earlier this month. On Tuesday, ICE took her into custody.
“Deportation officers with ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team arrested Rosiane Santos, an unlawfully present citizen of Brazil, today near Falmouth, Massachusetts,” John Mohan, an ICE Spokesman, told CBS Boston.
“It’s just a hat at the end of the day,” Turner told CBS. “I don’t really understand why people can’t just express themselves anymore, everybody has to get mad.”
“I don’t ever want to assume people are illegal because I don’t think that’s fair to a lot of good citizens,” he said. “It’s good that they got her.”
Santos has been released from ICE custody and has been ordered to appear before a judge to begin proceedings to remove her from the United States.

That’s awesome. Myself as a former *legal* immigrant from Brazil I hope she gets expedited deportation – she gives legal immigrants a bad reputation and the nerve of being here assaulting and harassing their host citizens. Throw the book at her and send her a maga hat postcard.
