An eagle-eyed photographer managed to capture the moment a spooky-looking face emerged from the waves of Lake Erie.
Trevor Pottelberg, 42, was able to snap the incredible images while taking pictures in Port Stanley, Ontario, after the winds whipped up the 30ft waves.
The Canadian photography lecturer admitted to being gobsmacked when he picked the face out of the lashing waves.
He said that he believes that it could be the face of a departed seaman whose soul was showing itself in the waves.
Other online commenters suggested the bizarre features could be those of a monkey or dog.
Pottelberg said: ‘In this particular capture, two rogue waves violently clash together forcing water to skyrocket more than 30 feet up into the air.
‘The setting sun casts a warm glow onto the front of the wave, revealing a stunning find.
‘The image resembles a face rising out of the murky depths.
‘I get a sense that it is the spirit of someone who went down with their ship, only to rise again during these intense storms.’
However, despite several images being captured in a split second, Trevor said he doesn’t have a favorite single image.
He added: ‘To the naked eye, you don’t see the formation changes in each wave, but they form and split within a split second.
‘By photographing a set of waves, you begin to appreciate the changing dynamics of water.
‘I shoot at a high frame rate, so I can capture the entire wave from start to finish.’
