In some ways, liberalism is about nothing so much as the meticulous exploration of every answer to a question except the obvious one. A particularly violent example of that is going on right now in the United Kingdom, which is currently suffering from an “epidemic” of knife attacks.
According to the BBC, assaults and robberies using knives or other sharp objects have been steadily rising in England and Wales since 2015, and hospital admissions alongside them. In 2018 there were almost 43,000 knife attacks, a 31% rise over 2017 and the highest number since 2011.
But don’t worry, UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson is here to help. From the UK Independent:
Gavin Williamson said military personnel “would always be ready to respond” to calls for help while the Ministry of Defence “always stands ready to help any government department”.
No request has yet been made, Mr Williamson said during a question-and-answer session on Tuesday night.
He added: “I know that the home secretary is looking very closely at how he can ensure that everything is done to tackle this problem at the moment.”
Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, had said she would be willing to bring in troops to support her officers as they battle a spate of stabbings.
And why is this even a question? Because the number of police patrolling the streets of England and Wales are down by more than 20,000 since 2010. “We just don’t have enough officers,” according to the National Police Chiefs Council.
This is the country that used to dominate the Western world, reduced to such a mess that it can’t even protect its own citizens from simple barbarism. But is calling in the military really the only option for making up for the lack of cops? It seems like they’re missing something…
Obviously, no police or security can be everywhere all the time. But that’s why when we Americans broke off from the British crown, we enshrined in our Constitution the right and responsibility to take control of our own defense, and arm ourselves to make self-defense viable.
Insanely, however, the UK makes that all-but impossible. As Tom Knighton at Bearing Arms argues:
And, let’s face it, the UK has sucked at stopping the flow of illegal guns into the country. With that in mind, how long until the country’s home-grown terrorists start figuring out how to get their hands on guns?
Assuming, of course, they don’t already.
Meanwhile, the problem is that absolutely none of the many people in the area where such an attack will take place even can be armed. Yes, I can include a number of police officers in that category as well, for some insane reason.
These aren’t citizens. They’re not even subjects.
Ultimately, the British have to decide what kind of world they want to live in: one where the type of monsters who’d stab the innocent for money or kicks fear that their next victim might be able to blow them away, or one where 2018’s statistics (or worse) are the new normal, where families are reduced to begging their military to save them not from terrorists or hostile armies, but from run-of-the-mill punks.
How much worse do you think things have to get before the British choose the obvious answer?
